February 22, 2026: First Sunday in Lent

Today is the first Sunday of Lent.  Traditionally, the first Sunday of Lent invites us to reflect on Jesus' sojourn in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11).  In a traditional understanding of these texts people often talk about temptation, the offer to do something that is wrong.  But what if we think in terms of testing.  The tester begins the tests with "if you are the Son of God" or "If you are who you say you are."  The tester is asking Jesus to prove himself.  Another way to look at the question would be "who do you believe you are?"  How might Jesus' responses be understood as an expression of his confidence in his identity, in who he believes himself to be?  "I don't have to prove myself, I know who I am and to whom I belong"

Who am I?  What are the values and abilities that make up who I am?  Who do I believe I am in relationship to God?

Something to think about.
