A Lent Calendar

Paul lists early church roles: apostles, prophets, teachers. Today, these ministries need fresh interpretation. Apostles may be community‑planters or activists forging new paths. Prophets may be climate justice leaders, poets of resistance, or truth‑tellers naming harm. Teachers may be facilitators of deconstruction groups or creators of sacred content online.

The Spirit keeps expanding the job description.

Paul continues: miracles, healing, helping, guidance, tongues. A progressing faith perspective sees these not as rigid categories but as invitations to discern where Spirit-energy shows up today. Healing can include therapy, advocacy, somatic care. Helping might be logistical support, emotional labour, or creative problem-solving. Guidance may come through community organizing or pastoral accompaniment.

Paul’s list is descriptive, not exhaustive. God’s imagination is vast.

Where do I experience the Spirit’s movement in ways Paul may not have named, but surely would have celebrated?

Something to think about.
